Central Cinema

Located at the corner of Hannah Street and Pontypridd Road in Porth, near to Pontypridd in the Rhondda Valley, Mid-Glamorgan. This was one of the Solomon Andrews and Son’s Ltd. early business ventures into the cinema trade. It opened around 1916 and had a 25 feet wide proscenium.

By 1937 it was operated by the Cardiff based Castle and Central Cinemas Ltd., and they were still operating it until at least 1966, and it was closed soon after. It became a Top Ten Bingo Club on 9th September 1968 which closed around 2009.

Castle and Central cinemas owned the cinema from at least 1924 and ran it on 2 changes of programme per week at prices of 5d to 1/3d. They installed Western Electric sound system to see it into the sound era. It was noted as having 890 seats in 1951 when prices were 0d to 1/9d.

The Bingo appears to have ended in ca 2009 according to the auctioneers currently advertising the forthcoming sale of the building, apparently in a poor state, with a very low suggested price.
