Located in the Carlton South district of inner city Melbourne. Built as part of the Melbourne Museum, the IMAX Melbourne Theatre opened on 15th May 1998 with "Everest". It is located next-door to one of Melbourne’s historic Landmark buildings, the Royal Exhibition Building of 1880.
Most of eight-storey high cinema is located underground. The screen at the IMAX Theatre measures 28metres high x 31metres wide, and is said to be the ‘largest movie screen in the world’. First run feature films now play in the programming, as well as traditional IMAX documentary features. The cinema has 2D and 3D capabilities.
