Odeon Uxbridge

The original 1938 built Odeon was demolished in 1984. The site stood empty and unused for several years, until developers built an office block, which contained a twin cinema on the basement level of the site.

The Odeon was opened by the Rank Organisation on 12th July 1990. Seating was provided for 439 and 230. The Odeon was closed on 4th March 2001, just a few days after Odeon Theatres had opened a new 9-screen multiplex in the town centre.

The Odeon was converted into a Fitness First gymnasium.

I’m pretty sure this was my first ever cinema! I saw Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ there at the end of 1993 as a five year old. Not the most exciting or remembered of places (absolutely no photos of it on Flickr I can find, they’re all of its predecessor) but simply looking at the above reminds me of the excitement of seeing such a big screen for the first time.
