Located in the Opera district of Paris on the site of the Paillard restaurant. The Francais opened on 23rd March 1940 as a 1,150-seat single screen cinema. It specialised in screening French films, and was a luxurious cinema.
In 1973, the original auditorium was sub-divided into 2-screens, and another 3-screens were added from the former Cinemonde Opera around the corner at 4 Chaussee-d'Antin.
Seating capacities in the screens are 400, 545 in the original auditorium space, with the smaller screens in the former Cinemonde Opera being 95, 100 and 120.

Had the joy and honour of working at the Grand Hotel, two blocks from here 2006-2008…At this point this is the slightly poor relation of the three Gaumont theatres in the neighborhood…serviceable but without the modern functionality of the Premier across the way and the glamour of the old Paramount Opera now Gaumont Capucines
Friendly staff that would gladly just sell me a box of popcorn when I didn’t have time for a film…saw mostly middle of the road French product here
