Joe and Mildred Ritter decided this community needed a movie theatre and the old Blattner building that had been used for dances was available and seemed just the ticket. The grand opening was January 15, 1946. The first program was “Without Love”, starring Spencer Tracy & Kathrine Hepburn, a serial “Riders of Death Valley” with Buck Jones & Leo Carillo, and of course, cartoons. Admission was 25 cents for the kids and they could have popcorn or a pop. On the building above the marquee was a mural of the South Umpqua Falls. (from the South Umppqua Museum newsletter, Aug. 2008)

The bulding (built in the 1920’s) still stands and is now home of Umppqua Indian Foods.
