Lyric Cinema

Located in the north of the city centre on Edward Street at the corner of Parade. The building was built in 1847 as the Church of Christ the Saviour. In early-1909 it was converted into the Queen’s Hall Theatre presenting vaudeville, concerts and animated pictures. This only lasted a short while, as in October 1909 it wwas taken over by the Birmingham Arena and became a boxing venue.

In 1910, it became the Queen’s Picture House. It was refurbished in 1919 and was re-named Lyric Cinema from 22nd September 1919

The Lyric Cinema was closed on 10th October 1960 with Elizabeth Taylor in “Ivanhoe” and “Mail Van Murder”. It was demolished in 1985. Housing has been built on the site.
