Cineplex opened the Cineplex Esso Plaza on November 13, 1981 in Calgary’s Esso Plaza (now Fifth Avenue Place). The largest of the theatre’s nine tiny screens, Cinema Five, seated 173, while the smallest, Cinema Four, seated 75. The nine theatres seated 834 in total.

Following the merger of Cineplex and the Odeon chain into Cineplex Odeon in 1984, the latter chain took over management of the theatre and renamed it the Esso Plaza Cinemas, which were closed in 1996. It has since been renovated for retail.

I miss this theatre. I used to enjoy its $2 Tuesday deal in the early 90s.
