The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Ashburn is one of seven projects for the chain that have been designed by the Dallas architectural firm Hodges & Associates. A location at Littleton, Colorado, is also open, and locations in Austin, TX, Yonkers, NY, Richardson, TX, Kalamazoo, MI and San Francisco, CA are either under construction or in the bidding stage.

I must admit going to see ‘White House Down’ last year here was fun, although it took me awhile to adjust to eating a hamburger in almost complete darkness – now THAT was a challenge. I see that Cobb Village now has all it’s auditoriums to playback 7.1 features, wonder how and what Regal has up it’s sleeves to entice folk to go to it’s Dulles Town Center theaters come this Fall.

I’ve gotten used to eating in the dark. The worst part is getting the check. Total distraction, but I do it as quickly and efficiently as possible.

As of last Friday (the 13th) the brand new auditorium with 222 seats and a full blown 5 stage channels, and 43 surround Dolby Atmos sound system opened up here.

With built-on addition of “Theatre A” a few years back this cinema now has 9 screens and 996 seats. It’s now one of the older cinemas in Alamo’s fleet; projection is Sony 4K xenon (no laser) and all seats with the exception of the front row of Theater A are fixed high backs. Theater A has a pretty large side masked scope screen and Dolby Atmos; the other eight are all top masked. Programming here is a bit more eclectic than at the Woodbridge location; it’s probably the only cinema in Loudoun County that regularly shows films that are in less than wide release.

Theaters 3 and 6 are the largest after A and would be quite impressive for flat and not bad for scope. I saw Blade Runner in theater 6 (granted I sat on the second row) and it felt plenty immersive. The others are all fairly small.
