This was the first purpose-built cinema in Belfast. It was opened in 1910 by Fred Stewart, one of the city’s cinema pioneers. Its popularity, rather ironically, appears to have led to its demise, as, despite its many name changes, it closed after only five years when Mr Stewart opened a larger cinema, the New York Cinema, just across the street.
The building was eventually destroyed by a German incendiary bomb during the Blitz in 1941. In the late-1990’s the College of Art occupied the site.
