Hippodrome Cinema

Viewing: Photo | Street View

In Maldon, Essex, the Hippodrome Picture Palace opened in 1910, part of David Agar’s circuit. It had stage facilities and two dressing rooms. By 1926 it had been taken over by Shipman & King, and in 1934 they gave the cinema a major refurbishment. Known then as simply the Hippodrome Cinema, it is thought to have closed towards the end of World War II, and was eventually converted into retail premises. Today there is no trace of the former cinema from the frnt, but the huge stage tower behind gives some indication of the building’s previous life.
