Upon its opening on March 19, 1970, the Mall Cinema was located on the northwest corner of the property behind the Vernon Park Mall Shopping Center under Charlotte-based Stewart and Everett Theatres with a seating capacity of 530. The Mall Cinema quickly became Kinston’s leading movie theatre, eclipsing its sister theatre downtown(the Paramount Theatre), and becoming competition with the Kinston’s other movie houses which were the Park Theatre and also the Trans-Lux Inflight Cinema(also known as the Plaza Cinema which opened two months before the Mall Cinema on January 14,1970).
The Mall Cinema got the biggest hits including its first-run showing of “Star Wars” that played to sold out capacity crowds on July 29, 1977. A lot of the big Hollywood blockbuster films got first-run showings at this theatre. In 1985, the Mall Cinema was split into two auditoriums seating 225 each and was renamed the Mall Cinema Twin under Stewart and Everett. By 1986, Carmike Cinemas acquired the operations of this cinema after its acquisition of Stewart and Everett. It closed around 1996.
The theatre was used as a temporary location for a church following Hurricane Floyd.
