The Empire South Elmsall in April 2004

Located in Moorthorpe, midway between South Kirby & South Elmsall, West Yorkshire, 10 miles southeast of Wakefield. It was opened on 12th December in 1912. In 191 it was virtually rebuilt, opening in October 1919 as the New Empire Cinema. It was designed for both film and variety. It had a 34ft wide proscenium, a stage 28ft wide and 26ft deep with seven dressing rooms and a huge fly tower. Seating is given as 850 in the pit/stalls and 210 in the circle, although in later years the capacity is given as 900. The Kinematograph Year Books 1942-1962 list a Western Electric(WE) sound system. Films ceased on 15th October 1968 in favour of bingo from 17th October 1968. The bingo club operated into the late-1990’s. In 2006 the building was converted into flats, including the fly tower.
