Front Of House 1930's

Located in Thornley, to the east of Durham. The Hippodrome Cinema was opened on 23rd September 1912. It was built for and operated by Thomas Thompson of Middlesborough. In March 1928 it was taken over by the Denman//Gaumont British Theatres chain. Soon after a British Acoustic(BA) sound system was installed.

In 1939 it was taken over by an independent operator. It was closed in 1959. The building was given to the local Council in 1971.
