Tonic Cinema

In the Langside/Battlefield district in the South Side of Glasgow, the Queen’s Cinema was opened in 1922 by Battlefield Pictures Ltd.

In June 1934 it was sold to R. Pennycook and renamed the Tonic Cinema.

It was acquired by the Loray Circuit on 11th January 1955, and a ‘continental films’ policy (to rival the city centre Cosmo Cinema) was adopted. This was initially successful, but the Tonic Cinema closed in 1962.

The former cinema became shop premises. When I visited, in June 2003, these had been converted into a pub, Mission. More recently, that has been renamed The Langside.
