Regal Cinema

In Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, the Regal Cinema opened in 1930 on the site of the Grand Central Cinema that had been destroyed by fire.

The Grand Central Cinema had been owned by Samuel Hyslop Train. The Regal Cinema was owned by Hugh and Marion Train. However, in the early-1930s the couple presumably parted, as a notice in the Edinburgh Gazette, on 1st June 1934, stated that Marion Train relinquished all responsibility for the Regal Cinema.

In 1937 Hugh Train proposed some (unspecified) reconstruction and extension works. The architect was Alexander Cullen, Hamilton and the contractors were Messrs Stellmacs Limited, Glasgow.

In 1940 the proprietor was listed as J. Train. There was a 20ft deep stage; the proscenium was 24ft wide. There were three dressing rooms.

By 1953 ownership had transferred to Buchan Enterprises Ltd. Seating had reduced from 900 to 800. The Regal Cinema was still open in 1966.

According to the Scottish Cinemas database, the Regal Cinema followed its predecessor by being destroyed by fire. (No date provided.)
