Carolina Theatre

The Columbia Theatre was primarily a live venue but did have cinematic moments. Built in 1900, it opened December 1, 1900. It was renamed Carolina Theatre February 22, 1932 screening movies. It was closed in January 1939 and demolished to build a long running hotel. The hotel was then razed in the 1980’s.

Frank P. Milburn designed the European styled theatre which also had a space for City Hall. In 1915, the Confederate Veterans held their 50th anniversary there. Some African-American live events were also staged there.

Here is an item from Boxoffice of January 15, 1939:

“Old Columbia Closes

“Columbia, S. C. — The old Columbia Theatre, more recently known as the Carolina, has closed to make way for the new $1,000,000 Wade Hampton Hotel. It was built in 1900 as a part of the old city hall.”
