Sussex Exchange Cinema, St. Leonards

Located in St. Leonards-on-sea, near Hastings, East Sussex. The Sussex Exchange Cinema opened on Friday, 5th August 2016, with “Jason Bourne”.

It is part of a restaurant and conference complex which was built in 2012. New owners took over in June 2015 and work started in converting an existing cinema/lecture hall in January 2016 into a state of the art luxurious cinema.

The Sussex Exchange Cinema is situated on Queensway, St Leonards-on-sea, close to the junction of the new Bexhill to St Leonards link road.

It has 30 seats (+ 1 disabled) but the auditorium is of a decent size. Its standard priced 24 VIP seats are twice the size of normal cinema seats and recline. For an upgrade there are 6 premium VIP seats at the rear. These are more secluded and are in pairs, complete with their own tables. These seats have electric recliners and the seat part can be moved higher and lower. All seats have an additional pillow/cushion.

Those wishing to dine during a cinema visit receive 15% off their restaurant bill. The cinema is described as being of Dubai quality and is like nothing else seen on the South Coast and possibly in the country.

The Sussex Exchange Cinema will show mainstream releases and some live streaming and has no intention of competing with the boroughs other independent venues, namely the Kino-Teatr, Observer Cinema, Electric Palace, St Mary in the Castle, or Hastings Pier.

Its opening has given St. Leonards a choice of two public cinemas for the first time since the Roxy Cinema at Silverhill closed in 1960. There were cinema clubs operating in the 1970’s at the same time as the Kino-Teatr in its first incarnation as the Curzon Cinema.

As Nick says in the Overview, this really is the height of luxury! I visited on Sunday 20th August 2017 to see “The Dark Tower”, starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, and treated myself to one of the premium VIP seats along the back row. This cost £10, on top of the standard admission price of £14.95, but, as a treat, it was well worth it for the sheer luxury! The staff were very welcoming, and the show was introduced by a member of staff, all of which provided a nice personal touch.
