The Honoka'a People’s Theatre opened in 1930, and operated until 1988, when its deteriorating condition caused its closure. Two years after it closed, the theater was acquired by Dr. Tawn Keeney, who restored and renovated the 525-seat movie house, including new wiring, lighting, seating and a concession stand.
The People’s is open on weekends for movies, and also hosts live events such as long-running Hamakua Music Festival, jazz concerts, traditional Hawai'ian music and dance.
