Savoy Theatre

Located in Stockton, across the Hunter River from Newcastle, NSW. The Savoy Theatre was opened on 8th December 1937 with Janet Gaynor in “A Star is Born”. Designed in a splendid Art Deco style by architectural firm Crick & Furse. It had seating provided in stalls and circle levels. It was built for and operated by Cinemonde Theatres Pty. Ltd. They were purchased by the Fullers Theatres Pty Ltd. chain in 1943.

The Savoy Theatre was closed for a while in the mid-1960’s. It was re-opened in the late-1960’s by an independent operator Ken Hazelton. The Savoy Theatre was closed on 16th February 1980. It was converted into squash courts and a gymnasium. By 2022 the building is in retail use selling Surfing equipment.
