In Marlow, Buckinghamshire, a new Town Hall, designed in Neo-Classical style by Samuel Wyatt, was completed in 1807. It was arcaded on the ground floor, to allow markets to be held, and there was a large assembly room on the first floor.

After significant population growth, the area became an urban district in 1896 and the district council decided to hold its meetings elsewhere. In the 1930’s the adjacent Crown Hotel closed, and moved into the old town hall, which was extended to the rear. The assembly rooms continued to host major public events until the 1960’s.

The Crown Hotel (by then R Home) closed in 2008 and the building was converted to retail use, being most recently occupied by the Steamer Trading Company.

In 2019/early-2020 it was acquired by Hunter UK Retail Unit Trust URUT with the intention of “redeveloping it and breathing new life into it for the benefit of the local community”.

Plans were submitted in March 2020 for its conversion into a two-screen cinema, to be operated by Everyman. This was expected to be open in time for Christmas 2020, but presumably the Covid-19 pandemic played a large part in the subsequent delays.

In the event, the cinema opened on Friday 29th September 2023, bringing ‘big screen’ entertainment back to the town since the County/Odeon/Regal (see separate Cinema Treasures entry) closed way back in 1985.

Screen 1 seats 89 patrons, while Screen 2 seats 72. Both have NEC laser projection, Dolby digital 7.1 sound, satellite and live show capabilities. Plans indicate that the two screens are situated, one above the other, at the rear of the original Town Hall, presumably in the hotel extension. There is also Everyman’s usual Spielburger restaurant and bar.

The opening films were the comedy “Dumb Money”, the Agatha Christie mystery “A Haunting in Venice”, comedy sequel “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” and mega-hit comedy/romance “Barbie”.
