News About This Theater

Lyric in Flatonia, TX

This started out life in 1879 as the Foster Building(s). Live productions and silent movies were brought to town and presented in the Aerodome just down the street in an empty lot. The Foster Building(s) started out as the Happy Hour Theatre when the weather got bad they would bring the productions inside.

It was still known as the Happy Hour Theatre in 1929, but by 1931 had been renamed Lyric Theater. In the 1950’s it received a facelift and marquee along with its balcony. In 1967 the final show was “Beach Blanket Bingo”. After several owners, in the late summer of 2016 the Lyric Theater is about to open its doors again for movies, live performances and events.

James, you have no contact info, and I’ve been by there 3 times in June, and no one is ever around. I’d like to take some photos for the group.

August 21, 2009, marks the end of the Lyric’s second successful “Movies On Main” program. This is an outdoor series of films shown in the empty lot next door, onto a screen painted on side of the Lyric.

Hopefully this fall when it gets just a little cooler the clean up / out of the Lyric can start. This will allow interior renovations to begin, and its going to take a lot.

The Movies On Main program is back for the summer of 2011. This year sponsored by the City of Flatonia, with each movie being sponsored by a movie loving donor. If you are in the area on friday night at sundown, feel free to stop by and enjoy a great movie under the stars. Check out the current showings on the Lyric Theater’s facebook page

Feel free to “LIKE” us there!

Just uploaded a few more photos mostly from our town’s museum. Thanks to Judy Pate for supplying me with them. There’s also a very cool “Night” shot from just after one of our “Movies On Main” showing last week.

Still seems to be used for select events still. The main visual difference seems to be the added mint color from the tile work to the marque sign as well. (see latest pics)

From the April 1911 Issue of Motography:

“Philip Denham and Professor Carsey have opened a moving picture theater in the opera house at Flatonia.”
