Northland Cinema

Viewing: Photo | Street View

The Northland Cinema was opened by General Cinemas I believe in 1966. It was originally a 1,000 seat, single screen, but later split down the middle into a twin. The building raised in the front with an all glass front and brightly lit lobby. The concession was in the middle of the lobby and the color scheme was of orange and browns.

It closed for a while when GCC left the St. Louis market and was later opened and operated as an independent. I believe it finally closed for good in 1999 and was later demolished.

It was a stand-alone building located at the southernmost end of the Northland Shopping Center which was also demolished in 2007.

The Northland Cinema has been demolished. The whole shopping center, in fact, was recently leveled and replaced with a modern strip center anchored by a Target store.

Conversion to a two-screen operation took place in late 1976.

Another theatre that I practically “lived” in during the 70’s & 80’s. First movie I remember seeing here was “Car Wash” (of all things!).

How many screens did this theater have when it closed? I believe it might have had three, but I’m not too sure…

  1. Once Northland got twinned, it stayed twinned.

It was three towards the end. Check the St. Louis Post-Dispatch archives (about 1999) if you don’t believe me.

In August 1998 it started appearing in newspaper movie times as the Northland 4.

How in the heck did they convert that place to 4 screens?

It was only a twin. I was the manager there at the time of the twinning until early 80’s when I was transferred to the old Jamestown Mall Twin

GREAT PIC! I walked along that parking lot many many times in the early part of my life! Memories…
