    One-credit course/conference at the Brooklyn Paramount

    BROOKLYN, NY — Free and open to the public, Long Island University is hosting a day long course and conference at the old Brooklyn Paramount on Friday, April 15, 2011 from 9 AM to 5 PM.

    There will be panels in the morning with talks about the theater and its history along with entertainment in the afternoon. For the Rock & Roll shows that were there, Sammy Sax and the MD’s with singers Leslie Anderson (Lead singer of Cleveland Still and The Dubs) and Prentiss McNeill (Former member of The Drifters). Also several Jazz groups are scheduled to appear.

    Last Remaining Seats

    LOS ANGELES, CA — The Last Remaining Seats, a highly successful yearly event presenting classic motion pictures and live entertainment in several of Los Angeles' historic Broadway movie palaces will celebrate its 25th year May 25 – June 29 on Wednesdays at 8 PM.

    Along with those, there will also be two special bonus screenings on Sunday June 26 at the Palace Theatre. Conservancy members recently voted on which film would be shown that day from a list of past films in the series. They chose “Sunset Boulevard” and Nancy Olson(Betty Schaefer in the film) will be there at one of the screenings. To top it all off, June 26th will be the 100th Anniversary, to the day, of the Palace.

    For tickets, schedules and other information please see the Los Angeles Conservancy’s website. Tickets go on sale to members on March 20 and on April 13 to the general public. Don’t delay. Each night typically sells out in advance, sometimes just to members.

    “West Side Story” will play in July at the Hollywood Bowl with score performed live

    HOLLYWOD, CA — The fiftieth anniversary of the release of “West Side Story” will be celebrated at the Hollywood Bowl on the evenings of July 8 and 9 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic performing the score live. The screening will be the re-mastered version of the film in high-definition.

    TripAdvisor lists “Top Ten” city movie tours

    The travel advice site TripAdvisor recently featured its top ten recommendations for those movie buffs interested in taking city tours that focus on sites used for filmmaking. Heading the list, perhaps unsurprisingly, is a description of a tour offered in San Francisco followed by others offered in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and other places.

    The Cinema Museum a registered charity, which is housed in the old Lambeth Workhouse with its historic connections with Charlie Chaplin are holding a grand Film Memorabilia Fair & Bazaar on Saturday 19th February from 10am till 5pm. Features dealers tables with stills, posters,dvds,books, ephemera,and films of all gauges, plus bring & buy. Speakers include Georgina Hale, Murray Melvin & Valerie Leon.     Two of Chicago’s movie palaces open for Saturday tours

    CHICAGO, IL — Every Saturday, guided tours are offered of two of Chicago’s few surviving grand downtown movie palaces, the Ford Center for the Performing Arts – Oriental Theatre and the Cadillac Palace. Both are Rapp & Rapp masterpieces but are in very different architectural styles; both have been restored as performing arts theaters, especially for Broadway touring shows. (Occasionally, a tour of the Bank of America Theatre (once the Shubert/Majestic) is substituted, if either of the two is unavailable).

    Our guide, Richard, noted that the columns and walls resembling antique marble were done in scagliola, a plasterwork technique using pigmented gypsum. Some of the lighting fixtures are original, but others were added in the $28 million renovation.
