NEW HAVEN, CT — According to this article in the New Haven Register, York Square Cinemas will close some time in July, citing its inability to play first run films with Showcase Cinemas.

“It’s not fun anymore,” said Peter Spodick. “It should be fun: you make people happy, charge a small price, make a week’s pay. But we’re not able to do it.”

The article also states that the Criterion Cinemas is “struggling to draw audiences”, which is not the case.

Man, I was just out in New Haven for a Penderecki concert and checked this place out. It’s a cool little cinema with a long lobby, and a fun flat plastic letter marquee. Luckily I was able to walk in and look around and grab a few pics. I was looking forward to my next trip to New Haven and actually seeing a film here also.

This was a really cool little cinema that I’m certain will be missed by the regulars in the area. And right near that little Yankee Doodle food shop too. Sheesh.

What a disappointment. I live in Danbury and go there all the time. Saw the Ramones film there not too long ago and there are great black and white pics of the history of New Haven in the long lobby. What a shame.
