Long Island Theater To Bring Back 70mm

WEST BABYLON, NY — Taking a cue from the recent run at the Ziegfeld Theater, the operators of the South Bay Cinemas have decided to experiment with some revival and are going to play the 70mm DTS Version of “Lawrence of Arabia” beginning this Friday, April 7th for at least one week.

The theater is one of the few houses left on Long Island ready to play 70mm at any given moment. The management team led by James Kern and Bruce Latten are taking the opportunity to try and build some interest into making this a regular feature and keep bringing in some more 70mm.

Wouldn’t a NY based 70mm FAN CLUB that met once a month and showed a film be a terrific thing? Maybe it’s only pipe dreaming to some but with enough interest, anything is possible. And don’t worry about MAG soundtracks. This theater is equipped to handle it.

So, spread the word around and try to visit the theater in the coming week. Tickets are a reasonable $7.00 for Adults. Shows will be daily at 2pm & 7:30pm except for Friday when it will only run at 7:30pm.

Although we get our fair share of 70mm revivals here in Los Angles at the Cinematheque’s Egyptian and Aero theatres and the Arclight Cinemas among others, my dream would be to have a screen devoted to 70mm presentations. With the overscreening of many booking zones, it seems like an aging multiplex could do well to devote a screen for fans of 70mm in LA. Would probably do a heck of a letter better business than a second run movie at first run prices with 5 people in the audience. Do you know how well a 70mm revival of Raiders or Star Trek II would do in this town?

When I lived out there I always said that I wanted to take one of those single Mann Theaters in Westwood and do with it what the New Beverly Cinemas does only with a classier environment. A friend of mine explored the possibility of purchasing a while back the Mann Plaza in Westwood only to be spurned and then turned away to do the same thing with the Loews Astor Plaza in Manhattan and again be spurned on that purchase. I truly believe a revivial house specializing in stuff like 70mm, 3D, Sensurround etc done right in a big city would thrive. When I tell you these films do not cost much to lease each week, Im not lying. Ive done my homework on this. The problem has been finding the right theater & the financing.

Perhaps someone with resources could do it with The National in Westwood when/if Mann gives up its lease. Where is Paul Allen when you need him (restored the Cinerama in Seattle).
