Odeon Cinema Newport

NEWPORT, WALES, UK — The Odeon Cinema, which is officially owned by the NCLA (Newport City Live Arena) is currently being leased to Newport City Church, of which I am a member. This facility, wonderful as it is, is showing substantial decay. The roof is leaking in many areas and the building has no heating.

It would be such a shame for this wonderful building to be sold to developers to make flats, when there are other possible uses for it. Members of the local community (including myself) would like it to become a centre for community education, arts, charity and programs for kids. A building this size needs some type of funding or enterprise to be able to pay for utilities and maintainence alone, of which the church does not have.

Can someone help us preserve and possibly save this building from developers, and make it a centre the community is in much need of?

The heyday of 3D platformers fell on the era of N64, PS1 and PS2 – games about fluffy cheeky animals, who often traveled in tandem, dispensed millions of copies, and the very sweetest creatures became talismans of home systems. Since then, developers have matured (see Naughty Dog ) and have chosen more serious genres. Sunset “jumping” arcade based on the collection of all sorts of trinkets, occurred as suddenly as the recent renaissance – in the spring of this year, the sale came (or just expected on the shelves) Snake Pass , Voodoo Vince: Remastered , Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island and, of course, Yooka-Laylee .

In the preview, I noted that the backbone of Playtonic Games , responsible for Yooka-Laylee , are former Rare employees , not just casual guests, but the pride of a renowned studio for many years. You can see it personally , if you do not believe the printed word. They apparently did not like the harsh conditions in which the company put Microsoft , yet the authors of GoldenEye 007 , Killer Instinct and Conker: Live & Reloaded deserve more than messing with the Kinect Sports series .

Rebels established Playtonic Online Games onlineigry.su, attracted through Kickstarter over $ 3 million and quietly for two years did what they were masters – a 3D platformer about a hilarious couple of little animals, stuffed with jokes about the game industry. Design characters and locations – a special, “British”. It can not be confused with any of the modern projects, the sources of inspiration are the daredevils with N64: Banjo-Kazooie (1998) and Banjo-Tooie (2000).

In the story of Yooka-Layleethe main villain Capital B gave birth to a simple business plan – to steal all the literature of the world and remain the only player in the market. In the hands of the dodgers, there was also a magic book belonging to Youtube (green lizard) lobotryas and Layley (purple bat). But then it’s magical, that the pages take and run away – remember how they called! The cartoon tandem does not intend to turn a blind eye to openly stealing – with the help of a smart businessman Trauser, who sells tricks and contraband pants, they enter the Capital B factory, plastered with portals to go to five fantastic worlds.

Purely in the mood and environment of the location are very different: the sunny jungle, pirate port, sullen swamps … But the gameplay from level to level does not change – jumping on platforms, fights with dying mines from one or two blows, artless puzzles and various tests for time and smart, reward for which serve as Pagies. Pages – the keys to new worlds and the expansion of old ones.

As in Banjo-Kazooie, in Yooka-Laylee there is a mechanic of transforming the duo into something unusual for finding caches. At the winter level, you will become … a snowplow.

In order not to fall into the grip of boredom, I advise you to alternate locations with jogs on the “hub” – the benefit of the game condescendingly refers to free passage. The main thing, buy from the Tracer receivers, otherwise there will be nothing to experiment with. Over time, Yuk will master a pair of cunning techniques – he can absorb the properties of objects (touched the cannonball’s tongue – you easily walk past a powerful air stream) and grab from the stems the fire, ice and other spontaneous berries that for a short time turn an ordinary reptile into a dragon. Do not fall behind and Laile – her sonar is useful in puzzles, and the ability to fly, dragging a friend with him, dramatically expand the horizons of the game. Variability pleases, although it is clear that Yuka most of the time – a brute force, ramming the tail of enemies and a little that crumbling ground, Lailey prefers to dissolve the language in conversations with the NPC.Rare .

In Yooka-Laylee extremely convenient layout – movements and tricks set, but they are remembered quickly. With the Xbox 360 controller, according to subjective sensations, to play more pleasantly than with the DualShock 4. Sharp criticism from the media was the work of the camera: someone did not wait for the patch of the first day, someone I suspect was not too well friends with acrobatic arcades – all the same twenty years have passed since the release of Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie . As for me – control and camera scolded from scratch.

The simple bosses (well, throw it, we have a platformer), the sounding of heroes with monosyllabic sounds (what did you expect from the successor Banjo-Kazooie?) and the lack of a map. The latter – from the category of complaints on PaRappa the Rapper Remastered , migrated to PS4 without gameplay edits and perceived by modern players too hardcore.

But, as well as it is necessary to an ambitious project from modest studio, Yooka-Laylee is not deprived lacks. In the winter kingdom, you will be asked to spread a needle through the brick – then you will fully appreciate how awkward physics is in the environment objects being destroyed. And the phrase that the circle of Capital B repeats in his den? First they will laugh, however the further – the more annoying. Mini-games on arcade machines and arrivals on the trolley are also called successful – they quickly lose interest.

Hardly the loudest controversy has caused the performance of the game, which is strange – it works, it is flawless. I managed to evaluate the versions for PC and PS4 – the console port, for example, does not “sag” when there are many fire sources on the screen. Lighting and range of drawing, in spite of the vastness and complexity of the geometry of the worlds, is excellent, there are no complaints about textures either. In general, this is understandable – technically Rare games have always been irreproachable.

Impressions from the computer and console versions were summed up by the team of Digital Foundry (“iron” department of Eurogamer), confirming the obvious – the best was the PC version, which was personally handled by Playtonic Games , assigning porting to the shoulders of Team17 Digital. On the PC, if you have a good processor and GTX 980 Ti, you are free to bring the resolution to 1440p (from 60 fps) or immediately jerk at 4K. In fairness – the settings menu in Yooka-Laylee Spartan: for example, you can not block the frame rate at 30 fps. Versions for PS4 and Xbox One “plow” in 1080p / 30 fps – an abundance of objects on the screen and meticulous detailing does not affect the update speed. Console ports do not suffice unless qualitative smoothing is their only technical disadvantage. To blame Playtonic Games and Team17 Digital is also for not having implemented PS4 Pro support – owners of the “intermediate” platform Sonyyou’ll have to rely on Boost Mode, forcing the CPU and GPU to “crack”. In short, the developers completely coped with Unity and with honor avoided the bugs, achieving an impressive picture.

Yooka-Laylee – justified speculation on nostalgia. Ex-workers Rare succeeded on the main fronts – concerns both the visual appearance, and the gameplay, and the script. As far as Rare itself , it is still an impressive studio with more than a hundred employees – now its main forces are thrown at the multiplayer pirated “sandbox” Sea of ‚Äč‚ÄčThieves ( preview ), which should debut on the PC and Xbox One until the end of the year. I wonder if it will fire or not. In any case, Rare and her legacy to bury still early – and Yooka-Laylee living proof of this.
