Tarantino serves as ‘angel’ of the New Beverly

LOS ANGELES, CA — For the past few years, Quentin Tarantino has been operating as the owner of the New Beverly Cinema. This piece in the Hollywood Reporter discusses how he acquired it and how his contributions have led to a smooth running business.

The New Beverly has been the Torgan family business since 1978. But if not for the intervention of the director with the encyclopedic knowledge of film, it would be just another chain franchise.

“It was going to be turned into a Super Cuts,” Tarantino said. “I’d been coming to the New Beverly ever since I was old enough to drive there from the South Bay — since about 1982. So, I couldn’t let that happen.”

Thanks Quentin for saving the Beverly Theatre. Now next time your visiting the SF Bay Area let’s turn a closed little cinema into a B picture Grindhouse! A chain of these type of theatres needs to be brought back for a new generation to enjoy. Bring on the crazy trailers and the B movies you won’t find on junky TV. Make the place seedy like the old downtown cinemas of the past. Hire some of the old managers that ran these places in the 60’s to give attitude to the young punk college kids today. Get some old trashy lady to run the boxoffice that won’t put up with cell phones in the theatre.

Yes, Terry, brilliant idea. QT please open up in Chicago as well. There’s an old downtown theatre called the World Playhouse, 410 S. Michigan Ave. It’s been there since 1901. It’s got a very interesting history. It’s been an orchestra house, live stage house, foreign language film house, porno theatre, and from 1982 until 2000 it was part of the Fine Arts Theatre complex. You hear about all these celebrities opening restaurants all over the place; it would be so cool if QT would open a small chain of revival theatres. Where do I send my resume?
