  • Wanted: Smaller Neighborhood Theater in South or North Carolina

Looking for an investment opportunity to create a new independent theater for both film/video presentations as well as some live music events. Seats 100-300 would be ideal.

Prefer NC/SC costal cities such as Wilmington/Wrightsville, Charleston or Myrtle Beach but would also seriously consider downtown areas in Charlotte, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, etc.

Funds available for some restoration work, but ideally we want a theater that is 80% ready to run.

    Email details/photos to .

    Old Empress Cinema Burns Down

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND — According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, the Old Empress Cinema on Oldham Road has burned down:

An investigation is underway into a huge fire that caused the front of an old cinema building in Miles Platting to collapse.

Up to 30 firefighters tackled the blaze at the old Empress Building, Oldham Road.

The first crews from Manchester Central and Philips Park discovered the two-storey building well alight with flames shooting through the roof.

They immediately called for back up and were clear of the building when the front collapsed.

Debris was scattered across two lanes of Oldham Road, which was closed in the direction of Manchester to Oldham.

Note this Cinema was spotlisted as a grade 2 listed building a few years back and the authorities did nothing what-so-ever to secure this small piece of social history. Manchester City Council, Northwest film society, and English hertage all should hang their heads in shame.

So what’s new? Giving a building a listed status in the UK means nothing anymore.

  • Anyone have any theater seat covers for out of order seats?

Anyone have any theater seat covers for out of order seats? I am looking for someone who has some old ones for sale or maybe knows someone or a company that makes them. If possible, the ones that say ‘seat broken – out of order’ or something like that.

  • Looking for small art deco carpet

The Autry National Center, a Western Heritage Museum in Los Angeles, is planning an exhibit in 2007 on the centennial of Gene Autry. We are going to create a small theater and are looking for a carpet like some of the art deco carpets of the late 1930s. We need about 1000 square feet.

Any info on where to find carpet like this would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Looking for a Broadway theatre

I was in New York City in 1974, on Broadway, and there was a round theatre, and I was under the impression the auditorium was underground. It was playing the “Exorcist”.

I remember seeing very long lines totally around this theatre and I think the name of this theatre was the Paramount, however I can not find it listed. Can anyone update my memory of what this theatre actually was, and if it is listed here?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

A&E Television To Air Documentary on Loew’s “Wonder Theatres”

A&E Television’s “Breakfast with the Arts” series will feature a documentary on the Loew’s “Wonder Theatres”, located in the New York City metro area.

The two-hour-long episode will “tour” the various theatres, which all remain in various states of use and condition. The history and architecture of the five theatres will be explored, along with memories of the theatres and their social, cultural and economic influences on the neighborhoods they served.

The program is scheduled to air this Sunday, June 18th at 8:00 a.m. EDT.

A brief show detail is available at A&E’s website:
    http://www.aetv.com/listings/episode_details.do?episodeid=169001

This is rare opportunity for theater enthusiasts to catch a glimpse of the Loew’s Paradise, Jersey, 175th, Valencia, and Kings all in one place!

    Photos/stories on long-lost Bridgeport-area theaters?

BRIDGEPORT, CT — I’ve just become aware of several theaters in the Bridgeport area that are now just long-departed memories, but I was hoping there might be someone around to share some of these memories (or perhaps even photos). If there is anyone who has any info on the following, I would appreciate it: the ASTORIA, on 571 Newfield Avenue, BULL’S HEAD, on 1737 Main street, CRESCENT, 875 Main Street, ELK, 1071 Main Street, FAIRAY, on 2782 Fairfield Avenue, GEM on 235 East Washington Avenue, IMPERIAL on 515 Union Avenue, ORIOLE on 441 Pembroke Street, PEOPLES', on 1447 Main Street, and SEMANS' on 278 Spruce Street. Bridgeport sure had a lot of movie theaters. Unfortunately, the only one left is a relative “newcomer”, the multi-shoebox-plex on the Bridgeport-Fairfield border.
