    Concordia’s new movie theater opens

CONCORDIA, KS — In July of 2002, the Apollo Theatre closed and left the North Central Kansas community of 5,000 without a movie theatre until last night, when The Majestic, a four screen complex opened.

The Majestic is a joint venture with B&B Theatres of Liberty Missouri and a group of 20 local investors. The $1.4 million dollar project features wall to wall screens, a family arcade, stadum seating in all auditoriams, and DTS and Dolby surround sound in the auditoriams. The new theatre’s lobby is a 1900s-vintage design. While the theatre is completed work remains to be done on the parking area.

This project is a part of an effort to spur development in the city’s downtown. The municipality is offering property owners grants, and Citizens National Bank is offering low interest loans. B&B Theatres is the majority stockholder of the project with 20 local partners who collectively invested $640,000. B&B signed loans from Concordia’s four banks for the remainder.

The Apollo, which was a twin theatre, was located in the adjcent block from the restored Brown Grand Theatre which is used as a live production facility.

  • Life Magazine seeks the most interesting cinemas in America

CinemaTour is working with a Life magazine writer to come up with a list of the most interesting cinemas in America.

Recently, the Life cover was on unusual churches — the smallest, the hippest, the most stained glass. It was a big hit and now we want to do movie theaters. Specifically, we’re looking for things like the most romantic, most remote, most haunted, highest altitude, best food, most family friendly.

Nominations of categories and cinemas can be made on the CinemaTour Forum at http://forums.cinematour.com

The main floor will be for the live shows seating 300 to 600, while the balcony will be converted into a twin theater for first run, historical and cult films.

The work is expected to take three years to complete at a cost of around $3.5 million.

  • Elks Theatre to Reopen!

MIDDLETOWN, PA — After being closed for six months, the GMEDC has found an operator months ago, purchased a new sound system, projector, and installed necessary up-to-date fire code devices, the Elks Theatre is finally ready to open!

I went to the test screening last night of “Yours, Mine, and Ours,” and the place looks fantastic.

The theatre opens to the public for the first time since October with “Scary Movie 4.” The theatre will continue to get “newer” second run films, but the price has gone up all little. I encourage as many as you can to come!

    Who owns the Hillsboro 8?

TAMPA, FL — Anyone know who is re-developing the once Beautiful Carmike Hillsboro 8? It was retro-fitted in 99 to stadium, and features beautiful marble floors. It has been closed since the bankruptcy in 2000. They claimed road construction was the death of the location. The only competition now is AMC 14 at Westshore.

It sat empty for years as vandals did everything from lighting fires and knocking down light poles in the parking lot to breaking glass.

I’m interested in finding out if it will be turned into a car lot, or if they will be looking for a manager soon. I have over 7 yrs management experience, and am interested in learning if it will be re-opened.

TV Show Looking for Drive-in Theater/Home

Hello – I’m with Offbeat America, a Home & Garden Television (HGTV) show that features fun and funky homes and homeowners across America.

Do you know of any drive-in theater owners and/or managers who live (ideally year-round) in the drive-in’s main building? Same building where concessions are sold and the projector is located.

Best scenario would be a young family that has done some fun things with the home and really get a kick out of living there.

In addition to drive-ins, we’re very interested in learning about ANY home that is extraordinary in design or decor. But it really has to be unique.

If you know of homes that you think we should consider, contact me by phone or e-mail (both are provided below).

  • Why is the Monon Theatre closed?

MONON, IN — Does any one know why the Monon Theatre is closed?

I’ve gone to this great historical one screen theatre since the 60’s and cannot understand why it closed it’s doors. There are still renters in the building and the marquee is in great shape.
Why has this indiana treasure been taken from us.

Does anyone know the owners, would they be willing to sell?

    Please contact me at .
