Eddie Murphy double feature on screen one, and James bond double feature on screen two.

One of my person favorite “inside joke” double features was “Great Balls of Fire” the Jerry Lee Lewis Movie, showing with “Cousins.”

Tell me about it. It’s most frustrating for me when I read a post from someone on here stating “I visited the site today and took pictures…” but then they don’t leave any further information about the address, such as what part of town it was in, what side of the street, nearby intersections, nearby existing businesses.

The historic aerial photos can very easily document these locations, very quickly, if you know roughly where to look and during what years.

I’m just taking the clues you guys put on here, and turning them into detailed addresses which can be used with mapping programs such as Google Earth. I feel it’s also valuable to provide an aerial photo image to verify the address. It is good to get these places documented before they fall completely out of memory, as many locations already have.

NYozoner commented about Bill Alderman's Drive-In on Jan 29, 2011 at 4:51 pm

@Mike: Yep, I spotted it. Nice story, but not my definition of what qualifies for a drive-in. For a little town out in the boonies, I’m sure it was a fun thing to do at the time. More of a lawn gathering.

In my book, if they didn’t have a permanently constructed projection booth and screen tower with a ramped parking area, it was not a real drive-in.

NYozoner commented about East Buffalo Drive-In on Jan 29, 2011 at 4:42 pm

@Andy: Drive-ins.com has a 1958 aerial of the 28th Street Drive-In, which apparently used to be where I-4 intersects 28th St.

E 12th Ave & N 28th St, Tampa, FL 33605 will map to just south of the location where the drive-in used to be. I would have liked to view a larger aerial photo with more surrounding features, in order to positively identify the location, but unfortunately Earth Explorer does not have the 1958 aerial set available.

There is another drive-in about 1 mile east of the 28th Street Drive-In, at E 10th Ave & N 42nd St, Tampa, FL 33605, which Drive-ins.com also has a 1958 aerial of. Using that aerial photo, I have been able to positively match up the location to the address, but I do not yet have a name for that particular drive-in. Drive-ins.com mentions 6th Avenue Drive-In as a possible name, but it would be nice for someone local to Tampa to confirm this.

Both drive-ins were short-lived inner city drive-ins which I am sure were advertised in the newspaper, and would have been open in the mid-late 1950s.

NYozoner commented about Beach Drive-In on Jan 29, 2011 at 8:53 am

The drive-in is visible on Google Earth using historic aerial imagery.

There is another drive-in nearby at W 10th St & Avenue U, Riviera Beach, FL 33404 which I have not been able to name as yet.

Here is a 1968 aerial photo of the unnamed drive-in, courtesy of HistoricAerials.com.

Possible names are Riviera Drive-In and Roosevelt Drive-Ins, from Mike Rivest’s site, but I have no way of knowing which is the correct name for that location. Hopefully, someone local to Riviera Beach can provide the answer, or one of the Florida guys can hit up the library and dig it up from newspaper microfilm.
