Robert that was a great newspaper ad. It looks like the Festival was not a Walter Reade theater at that time. If you look under the ad for Marriage Italian Style it listed the Reade theaters and the Festival nor the New Torker were not part of the chain. I worked there from the late 80’s until 82 on and off for Joe Torress when they needed extra help. I think when Cineplex Odeon took over, they closed the Festival, but than when Loews merged they briefly reopened it. We had a lot of great movies there when I worked there. We ran Airplane simotaniously with the Coronet. I heard Valley Of The Dolls played there for 9 months in 1967 along with the Criterion.
In the summer of 69 they were showing double feature movies. That ended during the summer as they prepared for Applause. It has been a legit theater ever since. They were closed for 3- 4 years while they built the Doubletree. I hate the new marquee. The old one had class.
Maybe they were thinking it would do well since all the other theaters on 34th St closed, Murry Hill. 34th St EAst and Loews 34th St Showplace.I still cringe at the thought of AMC purchasing this chain.
I just had a horrible thought. I certainly hope they don’t have City Cinemas take over any of the Loews theaters. I keep hoping the deal will fall through
I’ve heard this theater does well and i can’t imagine AMC closing a theater that is doing well. There really isn’t any other theaters in that area including multiplexes.
As in other mergers, AMC will not be able to keep all the theaters. There is no way (anti trust laws) they will allow them to run the Empire and E Walk on 42nd. I expect to see probibly Clearview Cinemas or Regal to get some of Loews theaters in the merger.
I would love to see a film in 70mm again. I was really pissed this weekend when I saw War Of The Wolrds and as usualSteven Speilbeg filmed it in flat. I don’t know what his damn problem is but of all his movies he has filmed very few in scope.
This theater is long gone. I moved to Ft Lauderdale in 1996 and even than the Lauderhill Mall was a dump and mostly empty. I am not sure what year it closed. Lowes was not in the area when I moved there.
AMC and all the other theaters in Fla and here in Asheville, NC have the managers and regular staff run the projectors. I remember when I worked at the Festival in 80-82, Ben the projectionest there was making $54.oo and hours.
This theater did not close in the 60’s. Sometime between 76-83 the theater went from single screen to a 3 screen theater. It closed sometime after 1983 after I left NYC.
This is a perfect example as to why the AMC/Lowes deal should not happen. AMC pulls this crap all the time. I grew up in Phila and the Orleans was always a popular theater. The smaller single screen theaters in NYC and Chicago will really be in danger if AMC gets their hands on Lowes.
I rememeber in 1978 that the film version of A Little Night Music with Elizabeth Taylor was so bad that Manhattan didn’t play it at all. This theater had the exclusive NY/NJ engagement.
AMC owns a fairly new (maybe the last 10 years) theater in Orlando, the AMC Celebration Twin. I agree AMC will ruin the Tower EAst and some of the older theaters. I am sick of there mutilplex bull crap
You can pull up a picture of the Tower thetaer in Upper Darby which was operated by the Ellis chain.

This theater closed again in 2002. They tried runing Indian films but that did not work. It has since been converted into retail space.
I noticed the Beekman sign over the marquee was gone. Are they planning on using it in the New York Twin location?
Another great former Hunts theater ruined by the Frank family.

Who do you think will get some of Loews theaters, Theater Fan? I think Clearview would be a better choice especially for the 72nd St East

According to moviefone, the Crossbay 2 is still open.

WHere did you find newspaper listings that go back that far.
Wally
I live in Asheville, about how far is the theater from me?
Does the PAris have curtains or do they use those tacky slides?

If Clearview was smart they would take the marquee and use it in the new location.
Is it gone? Did it close this weekend?
Thanks Pablo
