Thank you gfradar. I would be interested in seeing those pictures. I would really like to see a picture of the Penway. I really like your story. Please tell us some more.
As a kid I remember the Star Art as being an X rated movie theater.
Gfradar….I liked reading your posting….Then you were related to Mel McClintock and Margaret Coghland?
This theater was owned by Walter Yost
Now John let me jog your memory…What color neon did it have on the marquee?
John, I can picture that in my mind. Now if Ross can come up with a picture.
If my memory is correct. The entrance doors leading from the outside into the Penway were solid wood doors. Much like the doors on the Valle in Mechanicsburg.
Dave, I think John S is referring to the projection booth.
AKA Loew’s State Theatre…212 Locust Street..Opened in 1930. Closed in 1969. Seating listed at 2,196. Operated by Loew’s, Wilmer & Vincent and Fox. Very nice write up Ross.
Ross..Opened in 1920 Closed in 1961 Seating listed as 1,580

That is really cool Chuck..Do you happen to have any pictures of those theatres?
Hello Chuck….The National I know was owned by Walter Yost who had the Penway,Grand and the Valle in Mechanicsburg…John S in York is a well of knowledge and can help I am sure..So can Norelco.
Chuck 1800 State sounds right.
Yellow neon as well I do think.
Ross..I looked at your blog and seen the picture of the Penway..I take it that is you and your mom at the tail end of the line?
Ross, thank you for your posting. The building is still there, used for offices of some kind. Let me jog your memory..The marquee, didn’t it have some purple neon on it?
norelco…I do believe the roof collasped and then was torn down.
I would like to see Ross post the snapshot his dad took of him at the Penway on his blog.
