Is it possible they were able to get another print of “My Fair Lady”. We cancelled our plans for the Saturday show after reading about the bad condition the print was in. Stayed home and watched the dvd instead. I had seen a bad print years ago, before the restored version and never wanted to experience that again.
Would not be surprised if the whole lower level is turned into another high priced theme eatery for the torist that frequent Time Square. The Virgin Store seems to keep shrinking.
And customers also have the right not to support this theater or any others that he operates. Hopefully Universal will decide not to allow this chain to book any more of their products.
Hoyts took over operation of this theater when they opened up their 10 screener just north of this location. They only operated this theater for a few months before closing it and selling off the seats, projectors, etc. THe Holyts Fishkill 10 is now owned by Regel.
THis 4 theater complex opened with The Empire Strikes Back and The Big Red One. Theaters 3 * 4 opened the next week. I can’t remember what their opening attractions were. This was the first multi screen to open in the area that was actaully configured as a multi screen instead on twinning an existing theater. There was no lobby with the thicket office and the consession stand opening up to the mall. There would be ropped off area in the Mall itself for people waithing for the next show. The bathrooms were on the second floor that were accesssed on wither side of the consession stand. The projest booth was also here and you could hear the projectors in the bathrooms. I can’t remember the eating but Theater 1 was the largest, Theater 2 & 3 appeared to be the same size and Theater 4 was the smallest.
These theaters were very popular amd they had a twilight show every day about 5 PM. The only theater in the area at the time that had shows during the day other than summer and holidays. I attended this theater very often. They had alot of sxclusives and showed art films from time to time. On weekends it was very common for shows to be sold out.
The Mall has been vacant for years because of the Poughkeepsie Galleria pretty much drove all others out of business. The Mall is in the process of being torn down with several big box stores taking it’s place including Home Depot. THe theaters will not be replaced. There is a 10 plex within a mile of this locations and the Galleria 12 in Poughkeepsie 10 miles north which is the big draw in this area.
I was in the Virgin Time Sqare store this past Sunday. Virgin seems to be slowly moving out of the lower level that they share with the Loews State 4. I wonder if this is to allow the whole lower level to be taken over by some other use, maybe another theme eating place. I remember CinemaNational operating just the Dutchess Cinema out on Rte 44. Which has now been converted into a Blockbuster Video store. This was a very nice theater. I remeber seeing Staurday Night Fever, Looking For Mr. Goodbar and Das Boot. Aa the end of it’s operation as a theater it booked mostly art films.
This theater was located in the Hudson Plaza. It has been converted into retail space now. Not sure when it closed, but it had been converted in to a twin. At the time of the closure it was operated by Cate (?) that also operated the Juliet in Poughkeepsie, The Mid Valley Mall in Newburgh, The Windor in Vails Gate and the Squire Theater in New Windsor. They also operated the Plaza at the Orange Plaza in Middletown. All the theaters in the Newburgh area closed (MidValley, Squire & Windsor) when the new 10plex open neared the Newburgh Mall. The 10plex was built by Ctae but UA aquired and opened it. The Juliet went independent and the Hudson Plaza & the Plaza closed before all the other theaters opened.
Hoyts bought the 10plex and operated it for a few years before closing it. This theater sat vacant for a number of years till it re-opened at the Showtime Cinemas with stadium seating and all new projection and sound equipment.
That was the Haines Theater that was totally destroyed in a fire in 1966. The movie playing at that time was ‘Georgy Girl’. It was probably the best of the Waterville Theaters. There was also the State, which has been converted to a resturant. After the Haines burned they started showing films at the Opera House again until the new theaters, Cinema 1 & 2 opened on Kennedy Memorial Drive in 1968.
I remember going to the Opera House for some Disney double features during 1966 & 1967.
Wasn’t this actually 2 – 6 screen theaters. The Rockaway Inner 6 and Rockaway Outer 6. The Inner 6 were inside the Mall off the food court and were replaced by additiona commercial space. The Outer 6 survived for a few more years and was closed sometime in 2001.
I had the pleasure of seeing a couple films in DLP at the Ziegfeld and did not see any problems with it. Seeing that 70mm seems to be a thing of history I don’t see a problem with viewing an unscratched print of a film.
I am hoping that the Ziegeld will be showing ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ during the Christmas holidays. This would be the perfect theater in NYC for this engagement.
When ‘Funny Girl’ opened at the Cheri it played in all three theaters or awhile. Also the Cheri was the theater showing ‘The Killing of Sister George’ and had trouble because of the X rating.
The Juliet Theater was first twinned and was known as the Juliet 1 & 2 for a while. Two additional screens were added in vacant commercial space next door becomming the Juliet Quad.
They were unable to compete after Hoyts opened the Galleria Cinemas 8 in the Galleria Mall(now the Regal Galleria 12, soon to become 16 screens with a total make over with stadium seating this renovation will include new construction) and the existing Hoyts Cine Eight in the South Hills Mall giving Hoyts 16 theaters next door to each other.

This theater was new construction. The only existing space used was a long defunct A&P where the lobby is now.
Idiot maybe but I imagine that the week that the 3 Lord of the Rings films play will be the highest grossing of the whole series.

Actually the theaters that Hoyts US did not sell evolved into Northeast Cinemas. These theaters are now either being sold or closed as leases expire.
