From the looks of it, Cineplex already has a presence in Whitby since it owns a Playdium arcade location, but no movie theatre. This would’ve piss off the Competition Bureau if they dare open a cinema in Whitby.

Though still owned by Cineplex, it should be listed as open, but no longer showing movies. Name should be changed to “Playdium Brampton” since it reopened in 2019 and current functions as an arcade and entertainment centre. Cineplex already has a PlayerOne Amusement Group subsidiary that owns Playdium.

CorusFTW: “ Cineplex Odeon closed it on February 15, 2001, with its final films being Seducing Maarya, Shadow of the Vampire, Billy Elliot, Sugar and Spice, and Vertical Limit.”

Cineplex Odeon (Universal) ran the theatre when it was transferred to Loews Cineplex in 1998. They, Loews Cineplex, closed that theatre like you said.

Still Galaxy, which operated continuously since it opened albeit the corporate changes done back in 2003 when it merged with the Canadian unit of Loews Cineplex as Cineplex Galaxy.

SilverPlaqueVII commented about Galaxy Cinemas Nanaimo on Feb 15, 2023 at 12:14 pm

Galaxy Cinemas Nanaimo became the theatre’s present name since 2000 and has been maintained by Cineplex since 2003. What I mean “Cineplex” is the current company that is a byproduct of the merger of Galaxy and the Canadian assets of Loews Cineplex that became Cineplex Galaxy (until 2005 that is).

“It was taken over by Cineplex Odeon in 2005, and then Empire Theatres in September 2005. At some point after Empire took over, two more screens were added.”

Empire Theatres acquired the theater in 2005 because Cineplex had to sell off 27 cinemas due to antitrust concerns.

To reply m00se1111’s statement: Cineplex may have to transfer the Scotiabank Theatre name to Yonge-Dundas and VIP theatre that they acquired in 2012 when AMC departed the Canadian market. Many of its functions like an arcade, Coke Freestyle, party rooms and Outtakes would be relocated there. During the day, some of the auditoriums are used by Ryerson.

Not Cineplex Odeon. The independent entity was abolished in 1998 when it became part of Loews.

Cineplex Entertainment, which was then known as Cineplex Galaxy for the last few months, owned that theatre since 2005.
