Regal Cinema

Located in Evesham, Worcestershire. The Regal Super Cinema was opened on 10th October 1932 with George Arlis & Bette Davis in “The Silent Voice”. Seating was provided for 945 in stalls and circle levels. It closed on 1st May 2003 with Al Pacino in “The Recruit” playing to an audience of four. It remained empty and unused for many years, becoming derelict. In the summer of 2009, plans were proposed to renovate and restore the building, costing £2m (2 million GB Pounds).

The Regal Cinema re-opened in January 2012. The total seating capacity in the main auditorium is now provided for 306, with stalls seating now at tables, where 112 can be accommodated. In the circle there are 90 luxury seats, seating for 100 on 25 sofas and two Royal boxes each seating 2 persons. Two extra screens seating 60 & 40 were planned added to the upper part of the building and were due to open in the summer of 2012, but by 2019, nothing had transpired. There is a coffee shop & wine bar for the convenience of patrons.

The Regal Cinema is designated a Grade II Listed building by English Heritage.

The Regal Cinema opened on 10th October 1932 screening George Arlis and Bette Davis in “The Silent Voice”.

It was given a Grade II Listed status in 2002. It closed on 1st May 2003. Since then, various plans for re-use have been proposed (casino, bowling alley, restaurant, residential and even twin cinemas) nothing has happened to-date (August 2005)

An excellent new book on the history of the Regal Cinema has been published in May 2008 by local author Rob Hemming. With over 160 photos and 192pp, the hardback edition of ‘Shazam!’ – The History of a Regal Cinema, is available by contacting the author by e-mail: .uk

After a number of failed attempts, it now looks hopeful that The Regal will re-open as a single screen cinema in 2010.

The Regal is now due to re-open in early 2012, with one large screen (with tables in the stalls like the Rex, Berkhamsted) and two new mini-screens on the roof.

The Regal has indeed reopened, restored to its former glory with a similar auditorium layout to the Rex in Berkhamsted. Two further intimate screens are due to open on the fourth level of the building in the summer of 2012

I don’t know whether the two additional screens were ever constructed (regrettably I didn’t think to ask) but they were not being advertised when I visited in July 2013.
