Opened November 20, 1962 with “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm”, the Cinerama Theater was a beautifully designed single-screen located at 5889 University Avenue near College Avenue in San Diego. It had a wonderfully curved Cinerama screen (with its original “strip” screen replaced in the mid-1970’s), and excellent viewing from all locations. It was the first movie theater built in a shopping center in San Diego and was a popular destination for 70mm first-run movies (including “Amadeus”) until it closed on May 22, 1988 with Tom Cruise in “Top Gun”. It was victim of rising groundwater and a decision by Pacific Theatres not to renovate it. It was demolished shortly after its closing.
