Built around 1937, the Rio Cinema was a small independently operated cinema, originally seating was for 1,000.

By 1954 the seating capacity had been reduced to 588. It closed on 29th June 1976 and was converted into the Canvey Social Club. In recent years it has been called the Rio Bingo Club.

I used to enjoy saturday matinees with my friend Jonathan in the early 1960s.
Dan Dare and many other b grade movies then Goldfinger with my father.
Fond memories of walking home with a generous serving of chips from the fish shop opposite.
