This now shuttered Off-Broadway playhouse was originally a late-run cinema, first as the Bleecker Theatre and later as the Luxor Theatre, with about 600 seats. The seating capacity was substantially reduced for the installation of a modern “thrust” stage when Circle in the Square took over in the 1950’s.
More information about its history and the current status of the site is needed.

It’s still listed in the 1945 Film Daily Yearbook as the Luxor, seating 598.
It looks like the former lobby area will be the lobby for some condos they built above the former theatre.
I looked into this property further. In 1947 alterations were done to the building. Work was completed on December 10, 1947 and a C/O was issued on January 14, 1948 for a 300 seat theater. Not a motion picture theater. So, we have a movie theater that operated from at least 1918 to around 1945. Possibly, right up until 1947.
I attended a play here in the mid-70’s entitled “P.S. Your Cat is Dead”. The first two letters should have been “P.U.!!!”
Condos above the Circle in the Square Theater.
Is the theater still intact and can maybe be reopened?
never new this showed movies……….
A Rose Theatre shows up in a 1923 Paramount Week ad as located on Bleecker and Thompson. Could this have been the Luxor, Garrick or even an early version of the Bleecker Street Cinema?
Renewing link.
Featuring plays in 1948 as the New Stage Theatre. By 1950 it is the Bleecker Street Playhouse.
