On the northwest corner of the Isle of Wight is the town of Cowes, noted as the "yachting capital" of the British Isles. With limited evening entertainment, locals and visiting sailors, went to the only cinema in town; the Royalty. With a rather drab looking facade, film-goers were faced with a flight of steep steps up to the lobby and main floor, then even more before stairs leading up to the small balcony.

The Royalty Cinema opened in 1919 and was operated by Cowes Cinema Ltd. It led an uneventful life and was closed in August 1961. It was converted into a supermarket and a social club.

The Royalty closed in August 1961, it was later a Lipton supermarket and a social club, pretty sure it has been demolished now.
