Opened as the Grand Theatre in 1882, it was later re-named Prince’s Theatre. It was redecorated in August 1909 and by then was under the direction of Joseph Ormerod. It was staging variety acts and films were part of the programme.
In 1920 it had gone over to full time cinema use and had been re-named Princess Picture Theatre.
Later operated by Star Cinemas chain of Leeds, the Princess Cinema was destroyed by fire in 1964. The almost adjacent Empire Picture Palace (which by then had become a bingo club) was re-opened as a cinema, known as the New Princess Cinema.
The site of the Princess Theatre became a car park for the plumbers merchants who later took over the former Empire/New Princess Cinema.
