The Modern opened in the Forties and catered to “Negro” audiences for most of its existence due to segregation laws. It stopped showing films sometime in the Sixties once integration became the norm and black audiences could attend any theatre of their choice.

This theatre was owned by the Bailey Circuit

The Modern was already open in 1941 according to the Film Daily yearbook.
