A blurb from the New York Times, dated May 28, 1935 reads:
“The Vanishing World”, a Czechoslovak film, will be shown today and tomorrow at the Bohemian Annex Theatre, 334 East Seventy-Fourth Street."
This theater is listed twice in the 1945 Film Daily Yearbook, both as the Annex Theatre and the New Annex Theatre, seating 599. In the 1951 Film Daily Yearbook, it’s listed (once) as the Annex Theatre, seating 565.
Anyone know if this was also known as the East 74th Street Theatre?
The address given in the NY Times live theater listings for the East 74th Theatre starting in 1959 is the same as the address above.
Listed in 1930 as the Bohemian Annex with 600 seats. In 1935 it is listed as the New Annex with 600 seats.
Might this have been the EASTSIDE BAZAAR showing movies in 1971?
I don’t know this was ever a movie theater again Al, but I think it was also known as the Phoenix Theater in the 1960s.
This is a free preview from the NY Times dated August 10, 1961.
PHOENIX IS MOVING TO SMALLER HOME; Constant Deficit Prompts Switch to 74th Street
The Phoenix Theatre, which is in need of funds, will switch its activities from its 1,200-seat home, 189 Second Avenue, at Twelfth Street, to a more economical operation in the 299-seat East 74th Street Theatre, 334 East Seventy-fourth Street, between First and Second Avenues.
The larger Phoenix Theater mentioned in the NY Times was most likely the City Cinemas Village East. Notice the much smaller seat count given for this theater in 1961.
You beat me to it so some of this information might be redundant. The Bohemian National Hall, located on East 73rd Street was built in the 1890s. Around 1914 a movie theater was built as an annex to the Bohemian National Hall. The theater was built behind the Hall fronting on East 74th Street. Hence the name, Bohemian Annex Theater. A 1967 certificate of occupancy for the Bohemian National Hall which has an address of 321 East 73rd Street reads in part: Dressing rooms for adjacent Phoenix Theatre at 334-338 East 74th Street.
Here is a 1985 photo of the former Annex Theatre as the Eastside Playhouse, then home to the Light Opera of Manhattan. The caption below the photo states the building has been torn down.
Another shot as the Eastside Playhouse.
