Central Hall Mission

This replaced a Methodist church dating from 1869. The Barking Central Hall Mission was opened in 1925. It contained an organ and seating was provided in stalls and a large balcony.

During the 1930’s and into the early-1940’s it was used occasionally as a public cinema, especially on Saturday afternoons for children’s film shows, sponsored by J. Arthur Rank, who was a Methodist as well as director of the Gaumont & Odeon chains of cinemas. This all ended when the building was destroyed on Sunday 14th January 1945 when 14-people were killed in a V2 rocket attack.

The remains were demolished and a new Methodist church was built on the site, opening on 10th January 1959.
