Trio Theater

Baton Rouge has two small suburban cities to its north: Baker and Zachary. The Trio Theater in Zachary predated Baker’s only theater by decades, opened on May 18, 1948. A Quonset Hut style building, the Trio Theater was family run and featured many staples of small town movie viewing in the 1950’s according to its printed calendars. It was closed by the early-1970’s.

Members of the family converted the building into a flower and antique shop, which closed recently after many years of operation.

Looks like this is the place, a couple of doors down from the Asian Pearl restaurant. You can see the glass brick lined ticket booth in the corner.

May 18th, 1948 grand opening ad has been posted here. You may notice the quote “Balcony for Negroes”.
