Granada Theatre

Opened as the Putnam County Opera House in 1875. The Opera House was operating as a movie theatre by 1926. The Granada Theatre opened in 1927 with seating listed at 705. By 1957 it was operated by Vanderschmitt Theatres.

The Granada Theatre closed in the late-1950’s and was converted to retail space. It was destroyed by fire in 1985, with only the façade surviving.

A recent article indicates that this former theater opened as the Putnam County Opera House in 1875, apparently becoming the Granada in 1927, closing sometime after 1945. In 1985, fire destroyed all but the facade, which still remains. Here is the article: http://www.bannergraphic.com/story/1621742.html

As mentioned in the article, the original construction did intrude into the west half of the block. The rear of the building, still three stories, was actually hanging over the alley that split the block. Good thing the front section was saved, it’s a very nice old building.
