Built as a church, it was converted in either late-1909 or early-1910 into the Picturedrome. The programme was cine-variety. In 1913 it was re-named Hippodrome. It was closed at the end of World War I, but had re-opened by 1920 and was re-named Hippodrome Picture Playhouse by 1921.

It was re-named Carlton Cinema in around 1932 and was closed in 1934.
