Grand Cinema

Located adjacent to the Palace-Hippodrome Theatre. The Grand Super Cinema was a conversion of the Liverpool Victoria Insurance company’s offices. It opened on September 18, 1922. Due the its location on a slope, the stalls seating area was reached by going downstairs. There was a balcony which had a side-slip on one side of the auditorium. It had a 17 feet wide proscenium.

Always independently operated, it was closed on 12th May 1956 with Alan Ladd in “Desert Legion” and John Mills in “Above Us the Waves”. It was never equipped to screen CinemaScope films.

The Grand Cinema was demolished and a department store was built on the site. This too has been demolished and a MacDonald’s restaurant now stands on the site.
