Hampden Picture House

In the Govanhill district of Glasgow, the Hampden Picture House was opened on 4th December 1920 by Hampden Picture House Ltd. It had bug-resistant leather tip-up seats and the screen tabs were still being operated by a hand crank at the side of the proscenium when the cinema closed!

The cinema was sold to George Green Ltd in 1956, then closed in 1969. It became a Mecca bingo club until 1974, then a cycling club, then, from 1976, the Clada Social Club.

When I visited, in June 2003, the building was home to the Up'n'Down club, although it was unclear whether that was still open. The building has since been demolished, leaving, according to Google Street View in July 2015, a vacant site.
