New Central Cinema

In the Portobello district of Edinburgh, the New Picture House opened in 1915 and had 900 seats.

By 1931, per that year’s Kinematograph Year Book, the cinema had been renamed the Central Picture House and was equipped with a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system. At that time it was owned by Central Pictures (Portobello) Ltd. From 12th November 1942 to 1954, it was known as the George Cinema (and owned by Associated G. P. Cinemas). It then reverted back to New Central Cinema name until closure on 2nd December 1961.

The building became a bingo hall, then a nightclub. It was derelict in 1998. The auditorium was subsequently demolished, leaving the façade fronting new flats.
