Flix Student-Run Cinema

Located in Loughborough, Leicestershire, on the University campus, Flix Cinema has its origins in the Loughborough College Film Society, formed in 1946. This had its first screenings in the Engineers' Dining Hall, part of the former New Theatre/Picture Playhouse (in Ashby Road) that had been acquired for College use.

In 1952 the regular screenings moved to the newly opened Martin Hall on the main campus, although mobile equipment enabled shows at the Engineers' Dining Hall to continue into the 1960’s.

In 1966 Loughborough College of Advanced Technology was granted charted University status, forcing a split in the Student Union to accommodate the new University of Technology and the Union of Loughborough Colleges. The film society also split, now with campus screenings at the Edward Herbert Building, Martin Hall and Art College Great Hall.

However, in 1975 the societies came back together, as LSU Filmsoc. In 1978 a new student union building was constructed, with its own multi-purpose auditorium. LSU Filmsoc moved in, and soon afterwards was re-named Flix.

In 2004 the student union auditorium was re-developed as nightclub Room 1, so Flix moved to the newly opened, purpose-built, multi-function Cope Auditorium.

Projection was originally via a 35mm Cinemeccanica Victoria 5 projector using a tower. In the summer of 2013, with support from Loughborough Student Union and Flix’s membership, that was replaced by a Barco 2K Digital Cinema projector.

Flix has been open to the public for some time now. Screenings are mainly on Sundays, with National Theatre Live broadcasts on occasional Thursdays. Despite the cinema aiming to be self-funding, the use of volunteer staff means that ticket prices (in December 2016) are an extremely attractive £3.00 for adults and just £1.50 for concessions.

Now housed in a superb auditorium, in 2016 Flix is proudly celebrating 70 years of student-run film entertainment.

Sadly, in the spring of 2018 Flix was facing closure. However, thanks to an influx of new volunteers, it returned on Thursday 4th October (with “The Shape of Water”, starring Sally Hawkins and Michael Shannon) with a new regular day and a new direction, with emphasis on limited release and foreign language films; films that reflect Flix’s location near the School of Arts. Screenings will be followed by a discussion group, TalkFlix.
